City of San Fernando Endorses AB 1381
For Immediate Release
LOS ANGELES – The City Council of San Fernando voted last
night to support AB 1381, Mayor Villaraigosa’s reform legislation for the Los
Angeles Unified School District. San Fernando is the latest city to support
fundamental reform of the LAUSD. Last week, the Los Angeles City Council voted
15-0 to back AB 1381.
“We are fed up with the status quo in the Los Angeles
Unified School District,” said San Fernando Mayor Nury Martinez. “Reform needs
to happen now. AB 1381 will give parents, teachers, and community leaders a
much-needed voice in decision-making at local schools. We look forward to
collaborating with Mayor Villaraigosa to increase student achievement and lower
the dropout rate.”
AB 1381 has been endorsed by a broad coalition that
includes business leaders, Los Angeles teachers, parents, and community
leaders. Yesterday, a dozen religious leaders from South Los Angeles announced
their support for the bill. Also this week, Congresswoman Harman and the
Southeast Cities School Coalition - consisting of the cities of Bell, Cudahy,
Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon - came out in support of the
Mayor's plan. A full list of supporters is available online at: http://www.excellenceinlaschools.com/endorsements/.
AB 1381 expands authority for the Superintendent to cut
waste and bureaucracy, return money to the classroom, and boost teacher pay. It
establishes a Council of Mayors to collaborate with the District on joint use
projects, school safety, and school siting. It also creates a partnership with
parents and teachers, led by Mayor Villaraigosa, to turn around the District’s
lowest-performing schools. For more information on AB 1381, visit: http://www.excellenceinlaschools.com.
