Mayor Villaraigosa Will Meet With U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings

LOS ANGELES, September 12, 2006 - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will travel to Washington, D.C., Wednesday, where he will meet with the education secretary about his school takeover plan and lobby lawmakers for more money for the city.

During the two-day trip, Villaraigosa is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to gain support for his new role in helping govern Los Angeles Unified School District, according to the mayor's office.

Villaraigosa is also to meet with Marion Blakey, administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, and Franklin Lavin, undersecretary for international trade at the U.S. Commerce Department.

Congress is considering several bills involving funding for homeland security, transportation and education programs in Los Angeles, according to the mayor's office, so he also plans to meet with lawmakers including Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Sen. Harry Reid, D- Nev.; Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco; Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles; Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo; Rep. Howard Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita; Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.; Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn.;

Since late April, Villaraigosa has traveled to Memphis, Philadelphia, Dallas, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta, Sacramento and Washington, D.C., for a variety of speeches and meetings.  this.
